Japanese Sake Brewery in the foothills of Mt. Fuji

This project began in the foothills of Mt. Fuji-an encounter with the 21st (generation) master of a sake brewery with a history of more than 200 years. Mt. Fuji is the center of the culture of spiritualism. While the environment is severe, it is blessed with nature, which supported the long history of sake making and helped build the confidence of the sake brewers. It can be said that the essence or the ethos of the culture of Japan takes form in the sake making here and can be found throughout. At the base of the Japanese culture lies the unique, dramatically diverse topography which also nurtured the Japanese unique perspective of nature. This attunement with nature embodied through a period of over two thousand years, while absorbing various aspects of culture along the way, have shaped the culture of Japan.

With this historical context in mind, this project was not only about building plan of one sake brewery, but an activity of finding a clue to the big issue or responsibility on how to relay the culture of Japan to the future. As such, this project has been attracting the attention of a lot of people from the initial planning stage.

The actual planning area is a vast piece of land by the lake stretching over 10,000 square meters. The project involved a very wide range of work, from the construction of new cultural facilities to the restoration of existing facilities and cultural properties. The project is extensive—formulation of the entire city planning, revitalization of the local community, planning for creating new business, support for building a network in a global environment, introduction of state-of-the-art technology, promotion of international art and cultural exchange. The time span of this project is ten years and is still ongoing.

The world economy is becoming ever more borderless and it is necessary to understand the true nature of the underlying changes in our external environment. And it is our responsibility to face this task.
Surrounding this architectural project of a leading brewery in Japan, many professionals of various fields gathered to work together to understand each other and envisioning the future, strive to find concrete solutions. This is the reason why this project attracts the attention of many people and those with great expectations.
